Bio

Dr. Geci Karuri-Sebina is an expert on urban futures, including smart cities, networks, urban planning, governance and development, as well as innovation systems.

She is an Associate of The South African Cities Network. She has worked with The National Treasury, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), The Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa (HSRC), and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Advanced Policy Institute.

Dr. Geci is the author of numerous articles, and most recently the book Innovation Africa: Emerging Hubs of Excellence that contains a number of case studies that examine the origins of emerging high-end innovation hubs in Africa. It draws lessons from some of the most promising and successful African innovation cases, while exploring the factors that drive their successful emergence, growth and future prospects.

As an urban scholar and practitioner with an educational background in computer science, sociology, architecture, urban design and urban planning, she studies urban systems and uses trans-disciplinary approaches to help conceptualize and develop effective governance responses and approaches.
